Search, click, like, pin, make new board, pin, repin, and repeat. This may sound familiar to the many users of Pinterest, a photo-sharing website consisting of virtual pin boards. Pinterest, launched in March 2010, has quickly become a haven for fashionistas, do-it-yourselfers, and beauty connoisseurs everywhere. Kirkwood’s own stylish girl, Emma Friedeck, junior, became interested in the website about a year ago. Now at over 7,000 pins, she says “It’s bad. It’s getting to the point where I can’t stop.”
Her obsession with pinning anything from vintage Dior gowns to One Direction eye candy, is not just something to do when bored. As an aspiring fashion designer, Emma Friedeck uses the website to find inspiration for the sketch book her mother, an interior designer, gave her. One of her favorite Pinterest users, called Glitter Guide, fuels her obsession with beauty, design, and fashion. The people who inspire her the most include Project Runway judge Nina Garcia and fashion designer Alexander McQueen. Recently over summer break, Friedeck decided to take the risk of ombré-dying her hair. Before doing it, she made sure to save several pictures of the style to her “Hair Inspirations” pin board. There are many more trends she likes, including scarves and also socks with boots. To her, some style risks are worth taking, and some are not. She does not approve of concert bras and platform heels because they are too uncomfortable.
Whatever her personal style may be, Friedeck encourages people to do whatever makes them feel good.
“I don’t really know if people say anything bad about what I wear, but I don’t really care if they do. I dress like this because it’s what I feel comfortable in. I don’t wear sweats because I don’t feel like ‘me’ when I do. Don’t try so hard when you dress, just be yourself. It’s your style. It says who you are, just on the outside.” Pinterest has helped her find inspiration for her fashion reality.
