March holidays
Valentine’s Day is long gone, and, excluding St. Patrick’s Day, the next big holiday isn’t until Easter, or if you don’t celebrate Easter, then the Fourth of July. So whether you want some fun holidays to celebrate over spring break or you just want to be amused by the random things that have somehow merited a day of their own, here are some of the interesting holidays in March:

- National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day: Try a new kind of peanut butter or try combining peanut butter with something you’ve never tried, like grapes or maybe oatmeal.

- National I Want You to be Happy Day: Make someone happy today. Give out compliments, tell some knock-knock jokes or buy someone a gift for no reason.

- National Plant a Flower Day: The way to celebrate this holiday, which is supposed to be during the perfect time for planting, is pretty self explanatory: plant a flower, or more if you’re feeling up to it.

- National Good Samaritan Day: Do some random acts of kindness to celebrate this day. Make sure not to ask for anything in return for your good deeds.

- National Pi Day: Learn about the history of the famed 3.14 on this holiday first celebrated on a large scale in 1988 in San Francisco. Eat some pie or try to memorize some digits of pi.

- National Freedom of Information Day: Celebrate the birthday of the shortest president of the United States: James Madison, who was born on this day in 1751.

- National Corned Beef and Cabbage Day: If you’re not a big fan of regular St. Patrick’s Day traditions, celebrate Irish culture with traditional a meal of corned beef and cabbage.

- National Awkward Moments Day: Look back on the times in your life when you fell flat on your face or maybe just embarrassed yourself in front of your friends and laugh at how silly they were. Remember that we all have our moments.

- National Ravioli Day: Make some homemade ravioli or go out to a fancy Italian restaurant. You could also enjoy some of a staple of St. Louis cuisine: toasted ravioli.

- National Common Courtesy Day: Hold open a door or two. Let someone go in front of you in line. Lend your neighbor a cup of sugar. Maybe even say “please” and “thank you.”

- National Medal of Honor Day: Congress awards Medals of Honor on this day every year, a tradition that started in 1863. The first medals were given to a group of volunteers who fought in the Civil War.

- Epilepsy Awareness Day: On this holiday also called Purple Day, people can raise awareness for the almost 50 million people in the world with epilepsy by wearing purple.
- National Nougat Day
March 27:
- National Joe Day: Honor some of the special people in your life who are named Joe. Or, if you want to go all out, change your name to Joe for the day.
- National Spanish Paella Day
March 28:
- National Something on a Stick Day: Why is it that food seems to taste better on a stick? Celebrate this holiday by making some s’mores, kabobs or corn dogs, or by dipping bread or meat in fondue.
- National American Diabetes Association Alert Day

- Manatee Appreciation Day: Celebrate these beautiful creatures that are affectionately called sea cows and are supposedly responsible for early myths of mermaids.

- National I Am in Control Day: Take this day to work on controlling the things you can control and letting go of the things you cannot. Start a planner. Make to-do lists. Clean off your desk or your backpack and locker. Organize your life.

- National Bunsen Burner Day: This is the birthday of the Bunsen burner’s inventor, Robert Wilhelm Eberhard von Bunsen, a German chemist. Celebrate the invention that allowed new opportunities to use natural gas in chemistry and plenty of other areas of science and cooking.

So whatever fun holidays you decide to celebrate, enjoy the multitude of random days created in remembrance or appreciation of some things we take for granted or forget about. And don’t forget to read some “Lord of the Rings,” tell some jokes and proofread some writing.
