Like most Covid teens, I spent my entire March of 2019 obsessing over the new Netflix show “Outer Banks”. With nothing else to do, I put my seventh grade heart and soul into the pogues. I spent my free time binging the show and searching for new updates on the relationship of Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes. When season four of OBX came out, I knew I was in for a ride. Here is my (brutally) honest review of OBX four.
Let’s just say, it started out ok. After waiting almost two years, I had high expectations for the newest season of OBX. When I hit play on the first episode, and the pogues came back on my screen, I knew this season would be entertaining. Though as much as I love JJ, I couldn’t help but be annoyed with his rash behavior. With rumors that his actor Rudy Pankow did not want to come back for another season, I anxiously awaited every bad decision he made to see if he would survive: starting with his decision to bet most of the pogues’ money on a bike race without telling the others. Even though I love him, he turned into a whiny, occasionally funny manboy this season. Much like his actor who was a wuss, refusing to do even a cuddle scene with co-worker Madison Bailey, who plays his love interest Kiara. Although they both were in committed relationships, even with fans making their relationship uncomfortable, doesn’t he see she has a girlfriend and does not want him?
The second the pogues (though JJ did it for them) bought “Poguelandia” for way more than they should have, I knew so many things were about to go wrong. Yet, the atmosphere of the show and bearable music choices made me feel like I was back in 2019. But what would a treasure hunt show be without treasure? Once the pogues were requested to go to the mysterious, gloomy Goat Island, I had a bad feeling. I mean, who wouldn’t? Wes Genrette claimed he needed the blue crown because of a curse on his family? Not to mention, people stay away for a reason. I get that they definitely need the money, so I see why they agreed. The second they took the boat out into forbidden waters, anticipation flooded my screen, and though I was scared for their lives, I was glad for some entertainment to come. After the hospital scenes passed (I don’t even want to talk about the capsule scene), and the pogues had an ugly encounter with the kooks, yet again. I developed a deep hatred forRuthie, but Drew Starkey was back on my screen, so who can complain. One thing I loved about this season was Drew’s growth in his relationship with Sarah. I mean, seriously, they want the same things, and it makes their lives so much easier when they work together. Although that was some of the only good that came from this season, as entertaining and nerve wracking as it was, JJ’s storyline made me depressed to say the least. The guy went his whole life thinking someone who was, to put it simply, not good, wasn’t even his true father, and his real dad killed him?? No offense to the writers, but couldn’t they have given him a better ending, even if they had disputes with his actor? JJ’s death, even though I knew it was coming, made me cry for the end of an era. Moving on, I thought the storyline for finding the blue crown was fairly decent, although I feel like information came too quickly, and there was so much buildup just for them to get to Morocco and find it the same day. However, I did love that Rafe helped them to get it, and I wish he had killed Groff. Seriously, how did he get out of that ditch?
And how could I forget about the best thing besides Rafe this season: John B and Sarah’s baby. Although they are only 19, and I’m fearing for their parenting abilities given their circumstance, it’s nice to know that one OBX relationship will be successful (hopefully). And sorry, I’m all over the place, but Pope’s storyline is, dare I say, f’ed up. He worked his whole life to be something, and had to throw away his shot by standing up for JJ, just for him to die. I hope next season brings good karma for him. Overall, this season threw me for lots of twists and turns, good or bad, and even though I only mentioned some parts, it was action packed and I enjoyed every minute. The plot was decent, Rafe got more screen time, and I’m excited for the next season and to see where the writers go next. I just hope killing off JJ doesn’t ruin things. To say the least, this season was all over the place, but I love how they make something as overdone as treasure hunting so interesting. So to all the fans who haven’t found the motivation to watch yet, please do, just be ready to be angered, and I’m sorry for spoiling it.
