Hair bands, ponytails, bobby pins, and braids are all a familiar sight at KHS. Feather extensions have been catching up with these regular trends among teenage girls. After the first few feathers were spotted around Kirkwood halls late last school year, the trend skyrocketed among others in just a few short months.
“I thought they looked good in other people’s hair, most of my friends have them, like the majority,” Lauren Ferry, freshman, said. “It all happened at one time. One person got them and then everyone else did.”
Shannon Kilfoy, sophomore, thinks Ferry’s reason for getting feathers is common.
“A lot of people just got them because a lot of other people got them,” Kilfoy said. “I guess it just adds to their trendiness.”
Haley Reinkenmeyer thinks the new trend is just another trend that will fade in time.
“It’ll probably just be like a little phase. It’s kind of like those Livestrong bracelets because everyone will want them because they’re in now but like in a year no one will want them.” Reinkenmeyer said.
Whatever happens, some students are enjoying the fad while it lasts.
“It was kind of a new thing to try. I think it looks kind of cute and trendy,” Kilfoy said.
While the feather frenzy is no longer an unusual sight to the Kirkwood community, Mollie Carter, a senior returning from a year abroad and now a feather wearer herself explains that feather extensions really set Kirkwood apart.
“They didn’t have them in Taiwan and I didn’t see any anywhere I traveled, but right after I got off the plane in the United States I saw one in my cousin’s hair,” Carter said. “At first I thought it was strange but now I think it’s cool. It’s a bold statement. I think they are just unique and different and make you look like an individual.”
