Memorizing lines in Dutch isn’t easy for a nine-year-old. Yet, Sammi Kuehnlein, senior, recalls such a task for her part in “Miracle on 34th Street” as being the catalyst for her love of performance.
“It was my first show and I played a Dutch girl,” she said. “Most of my lines were real Dutch and it was extremely difficult. But I loved it.”
Since then, performing arts have consumed much of Kuehnlein’s free time. She was cast in every production during her time at North Kirkwood Middle School, and has been involved with KH Players since freshman year. On top of that, she has scored roles with Variety Children’s Theatre, Shooting Star, Summer Players, and even The Muny.
“When I’m not doing a show, I have lessons for acting, singing and dancing for an hour each every week,” Kuehnlein said. “But when I’m in a [KH Players] show, rehearsals are never less than two hours each night.”
Even while dealing with a hectic schedule, her parents have always been supportive by paying for lessons since she was very young. But the support of her friends, while equally as unconditional, is more begrudging.
“Not all of my friends are into musicals,” she said, “but they always come and see at least one performance for every show because they care.”
Kuehnlein’s time at KHS has been one of growth as a singer, actor and dancer.
“I’ve learned from every teacher I’ve ever had,” she said, “but Mrs. Schneider has really taught me to dig deeper [concerning] emotion.”
After high school, Kuehnlein plans on earning her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in musical theater.
“Singing and dancing are where my heart is,” she said.
