Rachel Hickman started a petition because she thought it was unfair that the Essex lot is smaller than the Dougherty Ferry lot and seniors are allowed to park in the junior’s spots on Essex as well.

“I thought it was unfair that the seniors are allowed to take the juniors spots,” Hickman, junior, said. “If you don’t get there before 7:30 you don’t get a spot and you have to park on the street or park in the senior lot and risk getting a ticket.”

She turned her petition in to the administrators with about 50 signatures. Her goal is to make the Essex lot a parking area for only juniors, but she doubts the administrators will change anything because it has always been that way. Hickman wanted to show the administrators that juniors are upset about the situation and that there should be a change. Despite the juniors frustration, KHS staff believe the current parking arrangements should be kept the same.

“I don’t think we should specifically have a junior parking lot. I think the parking is a privilege as you get older,” Romona Miller, junior principal, said. “It’s a problem at a lot of schools [with juniors] because the seniors do have the priority.”
