Cole Johnson is different from the rest of the class of 2021. Johnson graduated early from KHS, and now works at a full time job in construction. He plans on working until he can save up enough money to become a real estate agent and breed dogs. Johnson said he chose the professions so he’ll make enough money to support himself and his family.  However, Johnson’s true passion lies in music.

Johnson started making music after his brother passed away due to gun violence in January 2019. Johnson’s friend Kayden Cook said putting his experiences into his music has helped Johnson express his feelings.

“In the last year, he’s had a lot of growth in his music since he’s been putting [his] pain in the song,” Cook said. “There are a lot of rappers out there, but very few can do what he can”

Johnson grew up playing sports while his brother pursued music. After his brother passed away, Johnson quickly found his passion for music.

“He always wanted to be a rapper and [my brother] always saw me playing football,” Johnson said. “When he passed, I didn’t even have an idea of [how to make] music. At first, I wasn’t that good but I just had this drive. I don’t know where it came from, [but it made me want to] keep going and make something out of nothing.”

When Johnson moved to Kirkwood he met his cousin, Travion Mosby, who said they became inseparable. He describes Johnson as a little brother and as a loyal, kind and a person who he can count on no matter what.

“He’s gonna show the world his calling, which at first he thought was football, but music has spoken to him, and ever since he picked it up there’s no turning back,” Mosby said. “This guy is going to be someone everyone is going to remember. Everyone’s going to know his name.”
