LIFE of a Pioneer: surviving embarrassing moments

From the first day of freshman year to graduation, students pass through milestone events to mark their ways through the treacherous journey that is high school. Here are some of the most common.

Whether walking into the wrong classroom, going to the wrong lunch or taking a tumble in the middle of a hallway, high school students go through plenty of embarrassing moments. However, Kaitlyn Gibney, senior, has figured out how to diffuse these awkward times.

During the Senior Skit at the Turkey Day pep rally this past fall, Gibney played a Webster student and as she was running across the gym she tripped and fell. Although she said it was awkward, she found a way to dodge further trouble with the subject.

“I really had to laugh at it myself and if people joked to me about it I couldn’t get upset because it happened and it was a past event,” Gibney said. “It was funny, and being able to laugh at it myself along with everyone else laughing made it a lot easier.”

Gibney said a factor which might make handling these situations harder for high school students is the large number of students to hear and talk about what happened. Even though these moments may be hard to overcome, Gibney said they are a part of life for high schoolers.

“If it’s [something funny] be able to laugh at yourself,” Gibney said. “If it’s not necessarily funny just be able to tell yourself, ‘I’m going to be okay and everything is going to turn out alright and nobody is going to remember this in 10 years.’”
