With the recent rise in popularity of social media, restrictions and rules have been put in place by the Kirkwood School District (KSD) to reprimand any student who has participated in cyber bullying.
The 2012-2013 Kirkwood High School student handbook reads, “Generally speaking, communication between and among students that takes place outside of school is not of concern to Kirkwood staff unless it is brought to our attention because there is a disruption to the learning environment and/or to our students.” An example of this is if there is a conflict on school grounds between students because of a problem beginning on social media, then the staff will evaluate the situation and discipline if necessary. Punishments are based on the severity of the situation, whether it is a first time offense or if it is a police matter instead of a school matter.
Not only does KSD have expectations of social media, but so does Missouri. If a police matter, in Chapter 565, Section 565.090 of Missouri law, a person can receive a class A misdemeanor if 21 years old. Visit the website below this article to see what is considered harassment.
