Upon seeing a woman donning a dress made out of raw meat, I was stunned.
Maybe I’m in the minority, assuming that clothes were supposed to be made out of fabric as opposed to uncooked food, so you can imagine my surprise when Lady GaGa accepted one of her eight MTV Video Music Awards in a dress compiled of 100 percent pure beef.
But the more I think about it, the more I realize her outrageous outfits, as well as other celebrities choice of clothing, shouldn’t blindside me.
This is nothing new or out of the ordinary for any celebrities and is a perfect example of what fashion is all about at the moment: the shock factor. I’m certainly not what one would call a “fashionista,” but even I’ve caught on to the eccentric trend among celebrities the past couple of years.
Gone are the days in which those who attended high-publicity events were commended on their elegant and classic style. Now it’s become a competition to see who can make an inanimate object into a piece of clothing. It’s bizarre, it’s extremely questionable, but above all, it’s beyond entertaining.
Since the jaw-dropping, wow-I-never-thought-that-could-be-turned-into-clothing-but-you-made-it-happen era began, fashion has turned into a pleasant and amusing experience. Well, at least for those watching. Not only is it fun to guess what in the world Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and others will wear, it’s also incredibly inspiring and informative. You didn’t know you could turn a trash bag into a dress and then wear it to an event where everyone is watching? Well, girlfriend, you thought wrong.
This fashion time period is all about daring to be different, and I’m willing to bet that wearing a trash bag, or any other household item, out in public is a guaranteed way to be deemed as original.
Regardless of the fact that I find the outrageous fashion to be, well… outrageous, I can’t deny that it’s exceptionally creative.
It takes a lot of out of the box thinking to come up with a dress made strictly out of Kermit the frog puppets, but designers made it happen. And, unfortunately for me, that’s not the kind of thinking I can do when it comes to clothing.
It’s eye catching, attention grabbing and shock inducing, but that’s what keeps us all wanting more. Fashion today does more than just push limits; it defies all boundaries and pushes past restrictions.
So yeah, maybe Katy Perry’s latex body suit paired with a rhinestone Hello Kitty corset wouldn’t have been your first, second, or 1,004,505th choice, but it’s undeniably fun to watch.
Just so long as we steer clear of trash bags, latex and cold cuts when it comes to clothing, there’s no harm in watching others do so.
