Kirkwood and Webster have the oldest high school rivalry west of the Mississippi River. Both have preserved their traditional downtown areas. Downtown Kirkwood is home to the Greentree Festival at the start of the school year and the railroad that cuts through it’s downtown. Old Webster is home to the Jazz Festival and a terrible football team.
Kirkwood's historical society is the center of Downtown Kirkwood, and provides for the community.

Mark Borella is a 1984 Kirkwood alum who owns and operates the Seeds of Happiness studio.
"A friend of mine's son was sick, and we knew he wasn't going to make it. I made a handful of these little smiles, [and gave it to the family.] I said maybe you can hold on to [them] until you get your smile back. [The family] said 'it would be very selfish if I didn't tell you to do this for other people.'"
