The halls are decorated, the gym is booming, and the campus is red. This can only mean it is Spirit Week. Spirit Week is a week to show KHS school pride in anticipation for the annual Turkey Day game against rival Webster Groves for the coveted Frisco Bell. One day is dedicated to dressing up head-to-toe in red to support KHS, another day is for dressing up in Webster Groves orange and black to be as tacky as possible, and one night is dedicated to firing up the school for the annual Turkey Day game.
“It’s my favorite week of the year,” Mike Wade, junior class principal, said. “To see the school come together and to see the alumni that come back is a really cool time.”
Tacky Day might be the only day of the year KHS promotes wearing Webster’s school colors. Less than 24 hours later, Kirkwood’s campus will be filled with red and white for
Spirit Day, a day where students go all out in support of KHS. On top of the clothing, Kirkwood’s halls will be decorated.
“It’s fun to compete with the other classes with decorating the halls,” Dylan Hodges, sophomore, said.
Prior to the pep rally is the Chili Bowl Cook-Off where local restaurants compete for the best chili in town. Next is the pep rally to fire up the crowd. It is the final sendoff for the football team before they go to battle against Webster in the Turkey Day game. After the intense rally, the crowd heads out to a bonfire each year.
Spirit Week is a week of celebration for KHS. Students show their spirit throughout the week in anticipation of the annual football game. Between the battle of the classes for best hallway decoration, and the competition of the rival schools for the bell, spirit week brings out the best in KHS.
