What was expected to be a good season for the JV soccer team has turned out to be something much bigger than most anticipated. After winning their first six of eight games, the team was on track for a great season.
“We’re doing really good,” John Lauberth, sophomore forward, said. “Every game we go into, we expect to win because we have such a good record.”
Nick Geisz, sophomore midfielder, believes coach Joe Fisch has played a part in their success.
“He knows what he is doing,” Geisz said. “I’ve gotten in a lot better shape because of all the running.”
Fisch praises the team as a whole for its success, saying they all work well together.
“They’re a hard working group of guys, and they all get along,” Fisch said. “All I ask is that they work hard, and usually they do that.”
As a coach, Fisch has a specific approach to the game.
“Possess the ball, attack with speed and defend hard,” Fisch said. “I’m a big believer in being well conditioned, so we run a lot at the end of practice. When we get into tight games against good teams, with 10 minutes left, I think our guys still have legs and still are going hard while the other team is getting tired.”
Lauberth was quick to point out four freshmen, John Dowdy, Jake Poupard, Oscar Sanguinette and Jay Travis are making big contributions.
Fisch had the same commendation for the freshmen.
“Just like everyone else, they have a role on the team and they have a responsibility. Most games I need them to give 100 percent and take care of their job and they’ve done a good job,” Fisch said.
As for why the team has experienced such success this year, Geisz also thinks their ability to work together as a group has helped them.
“Some part of it is team unity,” Geisz said. “Another part is our skill. We have some talent on our team.”
With two games remaining, the team held a record of 14-3-4, and if one thing is for certain, it is that the KHS soccer program could have a bright future ahead of it.
