Ben Neuhaus, senior, began running because he was inspired by his brother.
“I started running because my brother was captain of the cross country team at that time” Neuhaus said. “I needed a fall sport and it filled that void.”
Neuhaus started running with the boys cross country team during the summer before his freshman year and now, four years later, he is preparing to compete in the state meet.
“Making it to the state meet is my proudest accomplishment so far.” Neuhaus said. “It took a lot of hard work to get here.”
The boys cross country team practices every day except Sunday. Practices last from two to two and a half hours every day.
Kyle Wyttenbach, junior, commented on the team’s devotion to the sport. “A lot of us take it upon ourselves to run everyday, even when we don’t have practices.” said Wyttenbach. “We all want to be the best we can be.”
David Edwards, junior, commented on Neuhaus’ ability and leadership on the cross country team. “Ever since I was a freshman I’ve always looked up to Ben,” Edwards said. “He is the fastest runner on the team and he is always trying the hardest at every practice.”
All of Neuhaus’ hard work will be worth it when he lines up representing Kirkwood in the state meet.
“When I line up for a race I try to have nothing on my mind,” Neuhaus said. “I visualize success.”
