Evan Booker had the best game of his high school career in a 64-61 win over SLUH on Tuesday January 29. Booker posted 26 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. SLUH (10-6) was favored over Kirkwood, who was 5-13 going into the game. It was a big win for the team in several ways.
“I like beating private schools,” Booker said. “I know a couple of the players on the team so it was good to send a message.”
The win over SLUH gives Kirkwood a two-game winning streak, which might be all they need to get it going.
“We were struggling for a little bit, so it’s a big confidence booster,” Booker said.
Getting hot at the right time might be all this team needs. They have played well, but lost several close games. The team feels that if they can continue to play well going into districts, they could be a dangerous team.
“We hope to keep it going so we can finish off the regular season with a nice winning streak,” Booker said.
The game also marked head coach Bill Gunn’s 200th win for Kirkwood. Booker said everyone was happy for him to complete such an impressive task.
“He’s a good coach who does it the right way,” Booker said. “He’s been my coach all three years on varsity, so I was just glad I could be a part of it.”
Booker said after the game the mood was very relaxed, with everybody joking and having fun. The team was proud of Coach Gunn as well as themselves for getting the win.
“A win like this just makes everybody happier. It makes practice easier.” Booker said.
