Turkey Day: Senior football quotes
Owen Backer, sports writer
TKC asked seniors on the Varsity football team questions including What does Turkey Day mean to you? and Why do you think the Turkey Day game is important? The Turkey Day game is an annual football game played between Kirkwood and Webster Groves High School on Thanksgiving. The winner is awarded the historic Frisco Bell.
Alex Ludbrook
“It’s tradition for the high school and it makes the whole Thanksgiving for me. It feels awesome to be a part of and is what most of the community has done for the past 100 years.”
Deion Brown
“It’s a nice feeling, getting a chance to [beat] Webster. It’s a historical tradition that has been around since the beginning of both schools’ history”
Khalil Webb
“Aside from the game being the only high school football game that people can come and experience on Turkey Day, I believe that the Turkey Day game is important to those who grew up in Kirkwood or Webster and followed this tradition. Just to be able to watch their kids do the same through this game is so special.”
Ruben Fulks
“Turkey Day means everything to me because it could be the last ride with my brothers on field. It’s all about tradition. I feel honored.”
Myles Kruger
“Turkey Day is special because not many people get to do this, and being able to play in front of everyone on Thanksgiving Day means a lot because you are representing your school and the past alumni that have gone through this tradition.”
Ethan Gjelvik
“It means a ton considering the history of the game and how much it has always meant to me. It feels amazing that I can be part of the history and a lot of people's last football game ever.”
Kam Richardson
“Turkey Day is the very last game of the season for the seniors and it’s our last high school game ever so it’s our last chance to shine. It makes me feel like I’m a part of something big.”
Jacob Riggs
“It is sometimes hard to believe that I get to participate in an event that started over 100 years ago. The fact that it has remained as big of a deal as it is for this long is beyond me. We're gonna win again this year.”
Gannon Sturdy
“My favorite part about Turkey Day is the excitement of being on the field and playing football for Kirkwood on Thanksgiving Day. I’m just excited to beat Webster and keep the bell at Kirkwood.”
Hannon Smith
“Turkey Day is important because the whole community comes together as one and has fun while doing it. It's a great feeling knowing I get to play in front of a large crowd in a rivalry game that is surrounded by hype and tradition.”
Patrick Fortune
“It’s about the history of big brother Kirkwood versus little brother Webster. We’re passing off the torch, soon the freshman will get to play, but for now I want to be known as the group that beat Webster badly for two years and didn't let them score.”
Jaheim Harris
“Turkey Day to me means tradition. I’m excited to see where life takes me outside of high school and to see the boys come together for one last win."
Nathan McDonald
“It means a lot that I get to be a part of something special that is a big part of Kirkwood’s history and Kirkwood football tradition.”
Andrew Kollitz
“To me Turkey Day means tradition and history because of the story behind it and how long it’s been played. It feels special to be able to continue on the legacy of so many people before you. It’s a way to bring the community together.”
Tyler Macon
“Turkey Day is the tradition between two rival schools. I am excited for the food and it being my last Turkey Day for KHS.”
Lorenzo Brinkley
“Turkey Day means we get to play to keep the bell every year and spend time with family afterwards. It feels good that we’re the only two schools that play and it’s a chance just to see who’s better and give people a show.”
Jadon Miller
“Turkey Day means a lot to me because I love waking up on Thanksgiving morning and being able to spend time with the people I’m grateful for and playing the sport I love. It’s sad knowing this will be my last time playing for Kirkwood so I hope we can put on one final show for the crowd.”
