Crown Candy, founded in 1913, is the oldest soda fountain in St. Louis. At nearly any given point of time, the line is almost always going out the door. The Crown Candy tradition runs deeply through St. Louis culture.
Come in for lunch and have your choice of their large variety of sandwiches, including their heart stopping BLT with up to three inches of solid bacon inside. After lunch, treat yourself to their extensive dessert menu, including malts, shakes and their “World’s Fair Sundaes”. Often times, deciding what you want from here can be the hardest decision of the day. Their most famous sundae is the Fire Chief Special with Two scoops of ice cream doused in chocolate syrup, strawberries and sliced bananas, pecans, nuts and a large dollop of whipped cream with a cherry on top.
Crown Candy was featured on the hit cable television show Man vs. Food, where their Five Malt Challenge was attempted (and failed). The object of the Five Malt Challenge is to drink five of their giant malts in 30 minutes without throwing up. Successful participants receive the five malts free, a t-shirt, and your name on the Wall of Winners.
Crown Candy is located in North St. Louis near the up and coming Crown Plaza at 1401 St. Louis Avenue. Also, check out their website.
