Rams Blog week three: Party like it’s 2011
This Sunday the Rams got annihilated by the Cowboys 31-7. Even though the score seems bad, The Rams deserved worse. We were outplayed, outcoached and outclassed by a Cowboys team that should have beaten. This game brought me back to the Spagnolo era; it’s hard to choose where to even start talking about this dumpster fire of a game.
The first thing is our complete and total lack of adjustments on offense. Maybe after our fourth consecutive three and out, it should have occurred to somebody on our coaching staff that trying the same things over and over again isn’t working. In fact, the Rams only picked up one first down the entire first half. The Cowboys got way too much penetration through our offensive line, sacking Bradford after an average of less than three seconds.
On defense, we made the choice to double cover Dez Bryant, which took an extra man off our line weakening our run defense. This would be an acceptable choice if we didn’t stick with it throughout the entire game allowing DeMarco Murray run for over 200 yards against us. It makes me physically sick that we have one of the most talented defenses in the NFL and we are wasting it because of bad coaching.
It seemed like the team as a whole was completely unprepared for this game. This unsettles me because this has become a trend this year. Last game against the Falcons, the Rams let themselves get pummeled early on only to figure out how to fight back too late to salvage the game. I still have faith in Jeff Fisher, but his assistant coaches are making me very nervous. What truly makes me angry is how we are consistently soft covering the opposing receivers. I will never understand why we will give Julio Jones, Andre Roberts, or Dez Bryant a seven yard cushion. When we do that, they will catch the ball. Jeff Fisher needs to speak to Tim Walton about his scheme soon, or we can count on our secondary being ranked in the bottom five this year.
The Rams need to improve across the board after this game and play the 49ers tomorrow. Although we won this game last year, it’s going to take some work.
