Rams blog week 4: A clear step back
The Rams earned a spot on Thursday Night Football this week, and they blew it, big time, losing this time for only 35-11. For the second consecutive week, the Rams don’t look like a unified team. Before the season, the Rams were hailed as “a team on the rise,” and after a great draft, things have been looking better for the Rams than the past five years. Now after only four games, this team looks completely lost. It’s gotten pretty bad in St. Louis, even though we are 12-point favorites over Jacksonville next week, I wouldn’t even bet on that as a sure win anymore.
Things we learned this week:
Throughout the entire game we only gained 18 rushing years. Although Daryl Richardson isn’t an elite back by any means, I wouldn’t put the majority of the blame on his shoulders. Our offensive line is completely incapable of run blocking at an NFL level. This is embarrassing when you figure in we are dropping 10 million clams on Jake Long this year. The coaches also decided to make Pead inactive for the day, which I’m sure didn’t help the cause. Another problem with that our offense once again looked very confused. Sam Bradford didn’t look like himself towards the end of this matchup, his accuracy declining with every play.
Our defense featured MAN COVERAGE! Although Boldin managed tear us to shreds at times, he seemed to be pushing off on every play, almost never getting flagged on it. I expect that if we continue to use man coverage, our secondary will improve over the year.
Another troubling theme is that our run defense has seemed to have sharply declined in the run defense category. Last year, we absolutely shut Frank Gore down in both games. This week, we allowed him to tramp over us for over 100 yards. Bringing back Jo-Lonn Dunbar helps things, but I think that the only real difference-maker would be to fire Tim Walton. Right now. Although that won’t happen, I sincerely hope that he is on a shorter leash.
Who would have thought that this upcoming game against the Jaguars would be such a defining moment for our team? This is our make or break. This is the game where we make the statement that we are not a team to be trifled with. If they give us a run for our money though, it’s time to start scrapping everything. A loss to the Jaguars at this point would lead me to expect Tim Walton to be shown the door this Monday, possibly Brian Schottenheimer too depending on how prepared our offense is.
I look forward to this upcoming week. Hopefully we will be able to gain momentum from this game to be able to make a playoff push later in the season. Don’t lose hope yet.
