Senior Profile: Blake Goddard
Less than two years ago, Blake Goddard arrived at KHS with the expectation of becoming a solid starter on the varsity football team. In the fall, Blake will take his talents to West Point, where he will play collegiate ball for the Black Knights. After college, Blake will serve in the army for five years and then plans to pursue a career in civil engineering.
After playing for Festus High School his freshman and sophomore years, Blake transferred to KHS, where he played a hybrid of quarterback and linebacker for the Pioneers. Blake was initially considering Mizzou, but Army’s offer was just too good to pass up.
“The facilities there are so gorgeous, and the education is top-notch, so it was pretty hard to say no,” Blake said. “It was better than any other option I had.”
Since its performance at the state championship in 2011, the KHS football program has been nationally recognized as one of the top programs in the country. During Blake’s junior season, the Pioneers defeated Fort Osage 31-7 at the Edward Jones Dome, capturing their first state title in school history. KHS ended the season ranked first in Missouri and number 17 in the country, according to USA Today. Blake said he has been proud to be a part of the rich football tradition at KHS.
“We’re always at the top, and there aren’t too many down years,” Blake said. “Where I’m from you have one or two down years, and then you have a good year. If it’s a good year, it’s a surprise, but here a good year is expected. I’m a huge competitor myself, so I just love it [at KHS], and I’m really thankful.”
Blake started playing football at age six. According to Blake, it was his intention to continue his athletic career at the collegiate stage.
“It’s been my goal since I could walk to be a Division I athlete,” Blake said. “I’ve always wanted to play at the highest level and work as hard as I possibly can. I’m ready to get rolling.”
