Dealers of Kirkweed
TKC interviewed three current and former drug dealers. For the safety of all people interviewed, names have been omitted to protect anonymity.
February 20, 2016
Dealer 1: Dealt for six months
TKC: Why did you start dealing drugs?
It was mainly because I had a busy schedule and really no source of income. It was pretty easy. I was around a lot of people who were associated with [weed], so it made sense. I tried to be as safe as I could with it, and I also knew it was a quick way to make money.
TKC: Why did you stop?
The risk. Knowing my age and the trouble I could get in and as I got a little bit bigger and selling more and more, I started realizing there are sketchy people. I wasn’t around just the people I was close with, so I didn’t want to get involved with the wrong people or be in a situation I wasn’t comfortable with.
TKC: Why do you like to smoke weed?
I started just kind of doing it with friends just for fun. Then I continued to do it because I enjoyed it. It makes everything easier. I don’t need it or anything, and over time it just became a habit that I enjoyed. I didn’t think much of it, but I knew I could quit the whole time, so I was comfortable with how much I actually was smoking.
Dealer 2: Has been dealing for a year
TKC: Who makes up your customer base?
It’s really all over. The oldest person I sell to is 50. It’s both guys and girls, but I would have to say more guys. There are both private school and public school kids who I buy from and who buy from me, so it’s really just everywhere.
TKC: Have you ever gotten in trouble with the law or your parents?
I have a good family life, and I want to keep it that way. I know if they ever found out anything about this it would ruin pretty much everything. I try and keep everything very discreet. All the weed I have is always super contained so it doesn’t smell or anything. I take all the precautions needed. Ever since I got pulled over and had a large amount on me, I don’t drive around with huge quantities in my car or anything.
TKC: Have you ever been in a dangerous situation?
Everyone who I buy from, they all own guns, so when you get up in quantity there will definitely be guns involved. People you think wouldn’t have guns have them, so it can be scary.
TKC: How much do you buy and how much money do you usually make?
Normally, I buy in bulk and I smoke a decent amount, and I’m still profiting around $400 every time I flip for a profit. If I wasn’t smoking some I would probably be profiting around $600 everytime I buy in large quantities. I have a real job as well. The money I make from that goes into my savings. My drug money, I keep in cash and use as spending money. With all of that I’ve probably made over a couple thousand dollars.
TKC: Have you sold anything besides weed?
Over this past summer I sold mushrooms. They’re very hard to come across, so other than that I’ve stuck completely to weed.
Dealer 3: Dealt for about three months
TKC: Have you had any close calls with getting caught?
Yeah, my parents actually found an ounce [of weed] one time. I got in a lot of trouble at first, but somehow I weaseled my way out of it. And they actually ended up giving it back to me in the end, so that was nice.
TKC: Was dealing ultimately worth it in your mind?
The money return was nice. You could make a lot of money quickly, but for the sacrifices you had to make I don’t know. It’s pretty sketchy. You have to do a lot of work for it and you have to talk to a lot of people you don’t necessarily know or feel totally comfortable around. Some of the people I used to buy from were really sketchy, so it’s really a trade off between the risk and reward. I’d probably do it again if I had to, and as I look back on it and it was a cool experience.
TKC: How and where would you go to make deals?
Sometimes it would be at a friend’s house or I’d have certain spots that I would go to. Like just a vacant lot that no one really goes to, so we’d make deals there. I actually worked out a system at my friend’s house where they would come park on a side street and I’d walk out like I’m getting in their car and then they’d drive me around the corner and they’d drop me off in the driveway so it wasn’t sketchy. I did that a lot. Just overall low key places. But a lot of the times people would be watching, but we didn’t really care that much.
TKC: Have you ever had weed at school or sold at school?
One time I actually did sell in the upstairs science bathroom. I ended up sketchily selling a couple grams up there.
