Shein
If you’ve been on TikTok, you’ve probably come across people’s videos of “Shein hauls” on your ForYou page. You’ll notice that they have piles on top of piles of new clothes. But that large pile of new clothes is worth hardly anything.
The clothes are cheap, and so are their practices. This brings up the concern for alleged intellectual property theft and forced labor. According to Make Fashion Better, big-name brands such as Levi’s, Dr. Martens and Ralph Lauren have filed lawsuits on Shein for copyright infringement due to the fact that the company is stealing their designs. Shein also doesn’t satisfy UK’s set requirements for their 2015 Modern Slavery Act, which requires companies who export products to disclose the working conditions of their factories.
Not only that, but if you’ve ever bought clothing from Shein then you’ve probably encountered poor quality clothing. An investigation in 2021 found some of their products contained unsafe levels of lead and other toxic chemicals. Aside from that, Shein is bad for the environment because of the way they manufacture their clothing.
