How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

Right off the bat: I need Andie Anderson’s backless yellow dress. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re seriously missing out. Beautiful costumery aside, any film with character names like Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) and Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey) is bound to be perfect. Andie, a journalist, tries to make Ben dump her in 10 days for an up-and-coming article. At the same time, he’s trying to make her fall in love with him for a bet (which isn’t hard because, come on. It’s Matthew McConaughey). This makes for an interesting and visually appealing film, but Hudson plays the part of an intolerable, clingy girlfriend a bit too well. There were multiple times I had to pause the movie and take a breath to offset secondhand embarrassment. Annoyances aside, this movie is full of scenes I’d put on a Pinterest board. I was glued to my seat from start to end, and then continued to talk about how much I loved the movie to anyone who would listen. It’s available now on Netflix.
