Future Plan: Realtor

In order to sell a house you have to find the house that caters to the person’s needs or wants. Aaliyah Earl, senior, plans to use this tactic and promote herself as a young realtor. While others may find real estate to be an unrealistic goal straight out of high school, Earl views this challenge as pursuing her passion.

Earl said she is sick of school and having to be behind a desk all of the time. When looking for a job that is exciting and can keep her on her toes, Earl chose real estate. She spent a lot of her time online researching realtors and the requirements that come along with the job.

“If I would have known that real estate was something that I wanted to jump into I probably would have taken business-related classes,” Earl said. “I think that high school could have prepared me [better] if I had taken the right classes.”

To become a real estate agent you have to be at least 18 years old and acquire a real estate license. Earl said that once you get your license you could join a brokerage or try and start off on your own. Before joining a brokerage, Earl might try and shadow a current realtor to get more experience in the field.

“After school I plan on getting my real estate license, and hopefully move to somewhere like New York,” Earl said. “ I think my [best chance] would be [in New York]. That’s where I feel like I could get the most resources.”

Earl suggests to current students to follow their passions because you only have one life. Because she was interested in looking at houses, Earl thought that interior design would be perfect. After deciding that real estate was a better option for her, it has further inspired Earl to do what she loves and enjoy her future occupation.

“If there is something that you want to do and it’s not what the “normal path” looks like, I think you should go for it rather than regret it later,” Earl said. “Try, put the effort in, and if it doesn’t work out at least you tried.”

Earl will be younger from the rest of her competing realtors which may be a challenge for many. Despite this she feels prepared to go out and start looking for clients and feels capable of communicating and doing interviews with adults. Although she never really liked school, Earl believes that KHS has helped her overall develop these skills.

“I’m very excited to pursue real estate, look at different [properties] and meet different people,” said Earl. “I’m excited because it’s something I enjoy doing and I know I’ll have fun.”
